Those held have been portrayed by officials as being part of a plot to overthrow the ruling system of a strong U.S. ally; Bahrain hosts the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet. Being Shiite, suspicions circle that the alleged coup plotters would have been a gateway to Iranian influence in its tiny neighbor.
